It's never easy to change into a new season's wardrobe, especially when the weather is also a bit of a tease, with minus temperatures in the morning and 20 degrees during the day. So sometimes we might wear summer clothes in the afternoon, but in the morning we're reaching for our winter coats.
Layering can be the key word, allowing you to shed or add extra layers depending on the temperature at the time. Accessories can also help, a scarf or shawl, even a hat can be added when it's cooler and then taken off later when the weather warms up.
So let's take a look at some of the pieces you can add to your autumn wardrobe that are classics and don't need to be replaced every year, especially if you choose quality pieces consciously.
Balloon jackets, loose knits, blazers? They're all perfect to complement even your summer basics.
The balloon jacket
Whether you choose a classic beige or a striking black leather, a balloon is always a reliable choice.
A good boot or booties
Whether you're a fan of knee-high boots or ankle boots, a new piece will help you forget how good you were in flip-flops not so long ago.
A flared skirt
Here you have several options. You can go for a classic staple, like a pencil skirt but with, say, a more exciting pattern, or a flared skirt but in a more striking colour. Skirts are great to wear with tights and ballerinas, depending on the weather, but also with long boots later on.
The perfect white shirt
As we've written about before, the white shirt is a real jolly joker, a great way to layer for the autumn season and can be paired with almost any occasion from denim, casual to office or casual. And it's easiest to throw on with, say, a pair of animal print shoes.
The comfortable blazer
We've often talked about how a blazer is a must for layering in autumn. This year, oversized, menswear-style, oversize blazers are a big thing, but if you're sticking with a prettier, more feminine look, it's important to choose a stretchy, comfortable fabric.
Scarves, shawls
Scarves and shawls can also be of great service in autumn, as you can easily carry them around in your bag and just pull them out when you feel the weather is suddenly cooler. We can wear them around our necks or as a replacement for a cardigan, or even in combination with a belt.
By the time we're getting used to the changing weather patterns, chances are winter and the minus temperatures will set in and we can start to re-plan, but let's face it, a seasonal wardrobe is always exciting, even if it's just getting out the old clothes.
